Chapter Nineteen

I walked outside. Sierra was sitting under a tree, fiddling with a leaf. “Hey.” She didn’t respond, so I sat down next to her. “I’m sorry I left without telling you. I missed you though, a lot.”

I could see that she was trying not to smile. “I missed you, too.”

“Did you call John?”

“Yeah.”

“Is he mad?”

“No, Kairi. He’s not mad. He’s worried about you. I didn’t get a chance to tell him everything. He has to think some things through.”

“I didn’t mean to just up and leave.” Tears sprang to my eyes. “You guys took me in, gave me a family, and I repaid you by taking off. It’s unforgivable.”

“You’re emotional. All newbies are. It’s normal. I guess none of us saw you taking off. It’s not like we’re mind readers or can see the future, but we should have sensed it. It’s okay though, I found you, now I have to get you out of this mess.”

I looked back at the cabin. “I can’t leave.”

“What is going on with you two?”

“I think I love him.”

“You just met him!”

“I know. It sounds crazy, but the time we had together…it’s been the best.”

“Fine. You have these deep-rooted feelings for him. But you can’t be with him, Kairi. He’s a hunter. He will kill you.”

“I don’t think he will. He’s had plenty of opportunities.”

“You’ve never been in love before, right?”

I shook my head. “No. Never even had a boyfriend.”

“Well, maybe it’s just a simple crush.”

I met her eyes. “It’s not a crush.”

She mashed her lips together. “How do you know?”

I smiled. “When he looks at me, his eyes are kind and loving. He’s protective of me even though I’m stronger than him. When he holds me, all my worries disappear. When he kisses me, I can feel his love. His scent, it overpowers me. It’s sweet and mouthwatering, but I haven’t bitten him—well, until today.” I thought about all the different ways he made me feel. “I never dreamed that I’d feel this way. I was such a loser and now I have him. I don’t want to lose him.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way.” She hesitated. “All those things sound wonderful, but you’re too emotional right now,” she repeated. “You’re not thinking straight. For about a year after we mature, we’re very emotional. You don’t understand love.”

“I don’t have to understand it. I feel it.” I held her eyes for a minute until she nodded and I knew on some level she understood.

She took my hand. “Then we’ll figure something out.” Her phone rang. “It’s John. Hello? Mhmmm.” She looked over at me. “Complicated…Yeah…Okay.” She hung up.

I raised my eyebrows. “So?”

“Nothing to worry about.”

“Are we okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, we’re fine.” She reached over and hugged me.

As we walked back inside, I asked, “Have you had a boyfriend since you turned sixteen?”

“Yeah. I had a fling with a nomad. He stayed with us for a week and we kinda hit it off.” She got a faraway look in her eyes. “Vampires have a special, intimate way of being together,” she hinted.
